Sling and Nappy Sale

Don’t forget to bring (lots of) cash!!

This Saturday is our annual Sling and Nappy Extravaganza!  If you’re sling or nappy curious or a hardened addict this is your chance!  Bargains galore, and an epic raffle.  As well as second hand slings and nappies we have a few stall holders including gorgeous goodies (wax wraps, wool dryer balls and more) from Olive and Ivy, and beautiful locally made clothes from Blackbird, and lovely smellies from The Body Shop.  Info follows for buyers and sellers (and both!!) below.

Buyers Beware!!
There is always a risk when buying second hand goods.  Jen and Gill and other volunteers will be on hand, so do ask advice, but here is some general guidance.

Second Hand Slings
Is the sling clean?  Is it faded?  Is there visible wear and tear?  If it is a buckled carrier are the straps slippery?  Are all the buckles working and with no cracks or damage?  If it is a wrap are there any holes, stretched out parts or pulled threads?  If it is an Ergo has the seller provided evidence that it is genuine (not fake.  If it feels “cheap” or if there are any typos on the safety label be very cautious).
These things are not necessarily reasons not to buy (except the fakes, don’t buy those) but they might impact how long the sling will last (a faded buckles carrier with slippery straps is not going to last another three kids, even if it has life for another one!) and the amount of money you are willing to spend!

Second Hand Nappies
Why are they selling?  Is it because they are useless – or is it because they are awesome but their child has moved on?  Check the elastic – is it stretched out and perished?  Check the waterproof layer (hold it up to the light) – is it still good or starting to fail?  Check especially around gussets and edging.  Check velcro – is it still good and grippy?  Stains?  (Don’t forget that apart from this last weekend the weather hasn’t been great – a good sunning will reduce most staining – better a good nappy with a stain than a really tired old knackered one without!).  Are they getting thin and ragged?  Think about price.  If its dirt cheap it may be worth a punt – but it may be a waste of money!  Remember that soft and fluffy isn’t necessarily absorbent – bamboo and terry can feel stiff and dry but be super thirsty.

How to Price:
If you are selling it can be really hard knowing how to price.  For sling pricing I would have a look at FB selling groups – given that people will be buying with cash and paying no postage or paypal fees I would expect to pay a bit less than online prices – as a guide under £20 for stretchy wraps, £40-60 for most buckle carriers (depending on brand, age, etc, maybe more for popular brands and toddler carriers, maybe less for other brands) and for woven wraps and ring slings it would depend significantly on brand (could be £20, could be £200!)

For nappy pricing it will depend on condition.  Some years bundles will sell well, others they won’t!  Often people price to sell, they want all their nappies gone, so if you price high you may not make sales because of other bargains.  On the other hand if someone wants that nappy they might buy it whatever the price!
For both slings and nappies please look at the buying guides above and price honestly – if your slings or nappies are tired (even though they still have life left for one or two more children) then please price accordingly.  Any faults please declare them.

How to Sell

Bring your items to The Baby Room either during Friday 26 April from 12 till 5pm or from 9am to 10am on the day of the sale.  Label them as follows (ideally with a sticky label or something that can easily be removed if the item sells, but won’t fall off too easily during a rummage!)
NAME
DESCRIPTION
PRICE

eg:  Gill Travis
Ergo classic standard buckles carrier.  Some cosmetic fading.
£40

Jen Harris
Lenny Lamb fitted bamboo nappy size 2 (10-20lb)
£3

After the sale.  You can collect unsold items and money from 2-3pm after the sale.  If you cannot collect on the day then please arrange a date and time with Jen and Gill within the following week.  We do not want to store your stuff!  If you wish to donate unsold items to us that is fine – we will either sell it to raise funds for The Baby Room, donate it to other good causes (Baby Bank, collections for Africa et al) or recycle it if necessary.  We will assume uncollected items are donations unless you have made specific arrangements with us.
We will take 10% from your sales for the Baby Room.

(NOT) Coming to St Thomas!

**Update from late March 2019**
Sadly, despite ours and Action for Children’s (who run the Children’s Centre) wishes we have lost our venue as West Exe Nursery are unable to accommodate us.  Therefore we are no longer able to offer this group and support in St Thomas at the moment.  If you have suggestions for an amazing central venue in St Thomas do contact us and we may look at returning.  In the meantime if you need breastfeeding support there is a West of Exe Breastfeeding Support Group at St Thomas Tots, on Thursdays from 9.30-11 in the St Thomas Centre, and you can always find Gill and Jen at The Baby Room on Wednesdays 9.30-2.30  and Fridays 12-2.30 (the A bus from St Thomas is just a short walk).

(Photo credit to the wonderful Paula Fernley – please check out her website if you are looking for baby photos).

We have been talking about it for a long time, and we are so pleased to announce that Nappuccino is coming to St Thomas!

Following lengthy talks with Children’s Centre, Devon County Council, Commissioners and anyone else who wanted to chip in we will be running the group at The Hall in West Exe Children’s Centre on Cowick Street.

Breastfeeding support from trained peer supporters, sling and nappy advice from Gillian Travis and Jen Harris. Breastpump hire too!!

Tea and cake, listening ears and a warm welcome!.

Jen and Gill are still based at The Baby Room, so we will be bringing a small selection of slings and nappies.  If you are hoping for us to bring anything in particular please let us know in advance!

The group will run on Fridays from 9.30-11.30am (then we will be dashing across town to do Nappuccino in The Baby Room from 12.00-2.30 – no rest for us!)

Summer Holidays are here!

The summer holidays are here, bringing joy and exhaustion in equal measure!  If you have school aged children you will be wrangling them!  If you have a little one you’ll be keeping on as normal, but suddenly your favourite haunts are swamped with big kids and half the groups you normally attend are cancelled.

Nappuccino is running  on Wednesdays and Fridays all summer!

At the Baby Room Nappuccino will be running as normal throughout the summer holidays. Every Wednesday 9.20-2.30, and Friday 12-2.30!  We will also be running Saturccino on the first Saturday of the month 10.30-12.30 on August 4th and September 1st.  Both Jen and Gill will be away at some points during the holidays (Gill is away on August 17, 22 and 24, sling library will run for returns and hires without fittings on those dates) but we will cover each other as much as possible so the group is still on.

The rest of the Baby Room timetable looks pretty sparse over summer, most other classes are finishing until September.  We also have some timetable changes and new classes starting in the Autumn so things look lovely and busy then.

Mondays:

Post Natal Pilates with Annette will be back on September 3rd at 1.30pm.  No need to book, but if you would prefer to or would like to know more please contact Annette here.

On Mondays from 11th September Kim Allen will be back with a new Baby Reflexology course.  You can contact her here to book your space.

Bumps and Babies will be back on a new day and time of Mondays at 11.30 – 1.00 from the 11th September.  This is the flagship group for the NCT and prides itself on being an open and welcoming group for all bumps and babies.  You do NOT need to be an NCT member or have attended any of their courses or classes to come along, and it is a wonderful way to make new friends and find support.  Please bring lunch if you wish to!  We would also love some new volunteers to take this group and run with it so if you’re looking to give a bit back please consider volunteering – just mention it at the group.

Tuesdays:

Sadly the lovely Wendy Goldthorp has moved to a new home at Barefoot Physio.  However, this has meant that Clare can increase the number of spaces she has for Baby Massage.  Starting Tuesday September 11th she is running two five week courses, one from 10.45 to 12.15, and one from 12.30 to 2pm.  Message here to book your spot

Wednesdays:

Your usual Nappuccino goodness of Jen and Gill and Nappies and Slings and Cake and Tea and Babies!  Every Wednesday 9.30-2.30 including Summer Holidays!

Thursdays:

Thula Mama will be back on Thursdays in September with beautiful singing to uplift your soul and make your babies smile!  Please know that you don’t need to be a great singer to join in, the voices blend together and everyone can take part!  Find out more here.

Starting on 20th September we will be running a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter Course at The Baby Room.  The course is being supplied by Healthy Babies UK and is an accredited qualification.   If you’re interested in attending this course contact us here.  We have already had a lot of interest and limited places though, so please understand it may not be possible to accommodate everyone.

After school on Thursdays from 13th September we are pleased to introduce Helen O’Grady Drama Classes for lower Primary from 4-5pm and Upper Primary from 5pm-6pm at The Baby Room after school.  Contact them here.

Fridays:

On  28th September at 10.00 we are very excited to welcome Sing ‘n’ Sign to The Baby Room for a course to learn signing with your baby.  Please message here to find out more or book your place!

From 12 on Fridays it is business as usual with Nappuccino –  Slings, Nappies and Nibbles with a good cup of tea.  Every Friday including school holidays until 2.30.

Other Events this Autumn:

We also have more events coming up – on Thursday 20th September we are holding a Maternity sale.  If you have had your baby please bring along your old maternity wear to sell.  If you are expecting please come along to buy some clothes, or if you’ve recently had your baby label your maternity wear with your name and price and drop it off.

On 4th October we welcome back our wonderful antenatal The Pudding Club – a chance to learn all about slings, nappies and newborns.  Find out more here.

And on 20th October we have a fundraising Ladies Clothes Swap – bring along a selection of good quality clean clothes, have a little drink, and try a few things on – auction at the end for items people are in competition for.

Pudding Club this Thursday!

One of the wonderful things about having our own venue is the ability to hold extra events.  The Pudding Club is one of these.  The Pudding Club is a special antenatal class devised by Jen and Gill.  We know that conventional antenatal classes and programmes are often geared towards preparing for labour and delivery, so we don’t spend much time talking about birth.  What we are interested in is what happens next.

After all these months of growing and preparing you suddenly have a whole new person to get to know.  And no one warned you they would have opinions!

At the Pudding Club we talk a lot about normal newborn behaviour and what to expect from your little one.  Jen will give a run through nappy demos including different types of nappy and how to use them, and some useful tips on routines and methods.  Gill will show you a variety of different slings and some tips on how/when to use them.  We also chat about breastfeeding and will answer your questions as best we can on all these subjects.

But I nearly forgot the most important part!!   To help sustain us all through the evening – we will bring a selection of homemade desserts to enjoy while we chat!

We welcome couples for £20 or individuals for £12.50.  If you’d like to come along message us here, and we’ll look forward to seeing you this Thursday (14th June) at 7pm.

Sling and Nappy Sale

This week is Real Nappy Week!  It’s all about helping you make the changes to cloth nappies and learn a bit more about them.  We have our usual sessions at The Baby Room – Nappuccino on Wednesday 9.30-2 and Friday 12-2.30 plus the NCT group (non NCT members also welcome) on Thursday from 1-2.30.  The highlight of the week will be the secondhand sling and nappy sale on Saturday from 10-12.

To Buy:  Come along to The Baby Room between 10 and 12.  Pay £1 on the door and get shopping!  Have a cup of tea or coffee and keep shopping!  Jen will be on hand to give nappy advice, and Gill for sling advice.  When you’re ready to go head for the till and pay!  Cash only please so come prepared!

To Sell:  Bring your items to The Baby Room at 9.00 am (or bring to any of our groups on Wednesday 9.30-2, Thursday 1-2.30 or Friday 12-2.30).  Label them clearly (stickers are easiest) with your name, description of item including brand/size etc, price.  (Please also mention any faults, particularly if it might not be obvious at first glance)
EG:  Gill Travis, Size 6  Didymos Woven Wrap, £60, small pull in taper, cosmetic only
Jen Harris, One Size Stuffable Nappy £5

Come back at 12 to collect your remaining items and your cash!  We ask sellers to make a donation to The Baby Room from their takings (suggested donation 10%, more always welcome!)   If you choose to you may donate your remaining items to us.  We will sort through what is left with us, and depending on the condition we may keep it for future sales, absorb into trial kits or library, donate to other charities or recycle.  But one way or another it will not be wasted!!
